What Types of Cardboard Can Be Used in a Baler?

What Types of Cardboard Can Be Used in a Baler?

No matter the type of business you work in, you likely see heavy use of cardboard and OCC (Old Corrugated Cardboard) —the material is perfect for all packaging and shipping needs. However, there are various types of cardboard, and being able to distinguish between them is key for proper baling. When a properly trained employee uses a baler, they must pick out the right gauge of wire that meets the needs of the material placed in the machine. That said, it’s important to know what types of cardboard can be used in a baler so you can keep your machine running smoothly.

Vulcan Wire is a leader in the steel wire industry with over 40 years of experience. Shop our selection of baling wire today to find a reliable option that meets your exact needs.

Corrugated Fiberboard

The most common type of cardboard, corrugated fiberboard, comes in many different styles—but luckily, each style can be baled. However, it’s still important to know exactly what kind of corrugated fiberboard you’re working with. Likely, you’ll be dealing with products shipped in one of the following types:

Single Face Board

The thinnest and cheapest type of cardboard, single face corrugated board is lightweight and offers minimal protection. It is not near as durable as any other type of corrugated fiberboard.

Single Wall Board

Single wall board is typically the most common type of cardboard used. This type has one “wall” of flutes, which is a continuous sinusoidal arch of material. On either side of the flute is a thin layer of material. The flute can be of various thickness ranging from size A to size F. Size A is 3/16” and size F is 1/16”.

Double Wall Board

This type of cardboard is similar to the single wall, except there are two sections of flutes rather than one. In between each flute is another piece of material that separates the two walls. Again, the double wall board can use any size of the flute.

Triple Wall Board

A piece of triple wall board has three walls of flutes. This is the strongest type of corrugated fiberboard because the additional flutes provide more durability. A triple wall board may even be used to replace wooden boxes in some industrial-type settings.

Paperboard

Products that are protected with paperboard are much less fragile compared to those shipped in corrugated fiberboard. This material is not very durable, which is why it’s used to transport items that are not as prone to wear-and-tear. However, it’s much cheaper and easier to make, so it holds an important place in shipping.

Baling Cardboard

Each type of cardboard mentioned can be baled, but it may be best to separate thicker pieces of corrugated fiberboard from paperboard. Since you likely have more paperboard or single wall board, bale these together to save time and space.
