Steel is an alloy of iron and carbon that is widely used in construction and other applications because of its hardness and tensile strength. It is also the name of a lesser known superhero who emulates Superman, and looks like a mix of Thor, Iron Man’s War Machine, and John Henry the legendary “steel-driving man.”
Steel first appeared in Superman comics in 1993. After being saved by our famous caped crusader, John Henry Irons who was a weapons engineer joined the fight to protect his fellow man by constructing a crime-fighting suit made of steel with technological gadgets and a kinetic hammer. His persona is described as a “blue-collar Batman”, a vigilante using his own inventions. His character was also inspired by the folk hero, John Henry, who beat a steam-powered hammer in a contest to save his job.
Little known by the public (or just largely forgotten) is the fact that a movie has already been released starring a very big NBA hero, Shaquille O’Neal as Steel. Unlike today’s trending cinematic blockbuster renditions of comics, the movie was a box office flop grossing $1.7 million on a $16 million budget. The San Francisco Chronicle described it as a “tolerable stinker of a film” that “plays like a Saturday morning cartoon”, and in the same breath, praised Annabeth Gish as “the first woman-in-wheelchair action hero in a Hollywood movie.”
Despite the fact that Steel, the character, might not receive the fame and glory such as Superman, he is still a strong support for the good people to succeed at the end of the day.
